Sometimes when you are going to court, you not only need a lawyer that has plenty of training and a long legal career, but also a forensic psychiatry expert. Forensic psychiatrists are psychiatrists that have received special training that allows them to testify as expert witnesses in court and to examine the psychological state of people involved in the criminal justice system. Forensic psychiatrists are often called upon to analyze the mental state of criminal defendants in order to determine whether the defendant is legally sane and can be tried as a sane individual. Forensic psychiatrists are also often called upon to testify in court as to the mental state of defendants in criminal cases or the mental state of people involved in civil cases. Forensic psychiatrists are often called to testify in court as expert witnesses. Some forensic psychiatrists work for the state while others are independent.
